Hi David and others:
The original description as given in Hartman's Catalogue is as Mediomastus
californiensis Hartman, 1944, and this appears to have been considered
correct in Warren, L. M., P. A. Hutchings & S. Doyle. 1994. A revision of the
genus Mediomastus Hartman, 1944 (Polychaeta: Capitellidae). - Records of
the Australian Museum 46 (): 227-256.
The species treated are: Notes: Mediomastus acutus; Mediomastus
ambiseta; Mediomastus branchiferus; Mediomastus californiensis;
Mediomastus calliopensis n.sp.; Mediomastus capensis; Mediomastus
caudatus; Heteromastus caudatus; Mediomastus cirripes; Mediomastus
deductus; Heteromastus deductus; Mediomastus fragilis; Mediomastus
glabrus;; Neomediomastus glabrus; Mediomastus setosus; Mediomastus
thomassini
I suspect the "californicus" is simply an overlooked typing error. The above
information is from record 19439 of Ward & Fauchald Bibliography, 1997
(Ulm Univ. online version).
No references gave anything for M. californicus and 15 references, of which
this seems the most useful (and also the most recent), gave the original
version. A check in WebSpirs from 1993 to present gave 25 hits for M.
californiensis and none for californicus. Judging from the reports of this
species worldwide, it might be worthwhile taking a closer look at it. I don't
know how much it is spread with fouling.
Anyone else?

Subject: Mediomastus californicus???
Greetings from Tampa,
Does anyone have information about the capitellid Mediomastus
californiensis Hartman, 1944 being changed to Mediomastus californicus
(Hartman, 1944) ? We are proof reading a technical report on nonindigenous
species in Tampa Bay, and the authors list M. californicus (Hartman, 1944),
but do not give a reference for the name change. The references that they do
cite in the text list this species as M. californiensis Hartman, 1944. If anyone
has any information about this, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
