Dear annelideans
I am presently working on the polychaeta found in rocky shores in the State of
São Paulo, Brazil, with a group of students and am finding some trouble to
have access to descriptions of some ancient "well-known" species, for which,
although "well known", no updated diagnosis are available... at least as far
as I know... At this moment, I am looking for descriptions of sabellids,
particularly of Branchiomma species, but am having great trouble to get them.
The point is that we have two species of Branchiomma here, one of which has
been identified for a long time as B. nigromaculata and the other just
recently found and not identified yet. In regard to the first, we just
received a good description of B. nigromaculata and could see that it does not
apply to our material, which is most probably a new species. About the second,
Eduardo López, who is working with us, told us some time ago it could be B.
luctuosum, however we've been looking for information on that species for a
long time and could not find anything, up to this moment, which could confirm
or deny it. We found very few information on that species, spread in some
papers by Phyllis Knight-Jones (1994; K-J et al., 1991), but a complete
description of the species, with morphology of stylods, collar, chaetae in
general and so on is still missing. I tried to find Grube's (1870) and
Gravier's (1906, 1908) descriptions, but they are not available in our
libraries. So, I am writing to ask you if you know about papers with good
descriptions of B. luctuosum and other species of Branchiomma. I heard Phyllis
Knight-Jones is preparing a paper with Nishi which could solve all our
problems (hopefully), but it is not available yet. I also heard B. luctuosum
is very common in Italy and perhaps there are some good descriptions in
Italian journals, but could find anything yet. So, I'd be very pleased if
someone could shed some light on the subject and also if somebody could send
us material of Branchiomma species, particularly of B. luctuosum, B.
nigromaculata, and related species for comparison with our material. By the
way, Branchiomma is feminine, isn't it? So, the correct form is B. luctuosa? I
will appreciate a lot any help you can provide. Sincerely
João Nogueira
