Dear Friends,
I expect that many (most) of the members of the list did not have an
opportunity to know Dr. Marian H. Pettibone.
I began my own work on Polychaeta under the aegis of a Hebrew- University-
Smithsonian Institution joint project (1967-1972), and, at that time Marion
was the polychaete person at the Smithsonian. So I had a special feeling for
her (and for the Smithsonian).
I didn't see her often, being situated at such a great distance, but on
occasional visits to the Museum, Marian was always so welcoming and gracious
and so generous with helpful suggestions.
She was one of the two great women polychaete researchers in an important time
for polychaete research in the United States.
It's a sad thing when someone like that leaves us.
