Dear Colleagues,
Just a few comments from a non-polychaete worker on the person of Marian H.
Pettibone.
My first contact with her was in 1963 when I was in my Pogonophora stage. Some
of these had shown up in some 19th century 'Albatross" samples of colonial
hydrozoans & I was given access to these - the result being 2 new species.
Especially during these early years as an apprentice, but also in subsequent
decades after switching to Sipuncula, Marion was always a helpful and
supportive presence. It was always a nice treat to encounter her while
prowling through the stacks. She had a gentleness and warmth that made me feel
welcome in that imposing institutional setting. Our 'worm' community has lost
a person who helped make our corner of biology a more human and better place -
she will be missed.
Regards,
Ed
