I would like to add to the letters for Marian.
As a new faculty member at UH and a recent introduction to the states I was
willing to help the Museum and with Hawaiian polychaetes in any way. I had
begun my research with the spirorbids and then added some of the serpulids,
which was really my limit. I was asked by Bishop Museum staff to work on the
rest of the coastal families! With some trepidation, I took it on. I relied a
great deal on Marian's advice and critiques.
I met her at meetings in S. California where we enjoyed the papers and admired
the flowering privet hedges. She came to Hawaii to see her sister and visited
the students at the lab. Marian talked with enthusiasm about polychaetes. We
all listened and enjoyed her conversation. I benefited from her patience and
the advice, reprints and referals she gave me over the years. She enjoyed my
family and her Hawaiian colleagues. Most of all, I remember the moral support
she gave me as a novice polychaete researcher. She was a gem, a delight to
know and an excellent role model. Aloha Marian and Maholo from a clear blue,
sunny Hawaii.
