Dear Colleagues,
Like so many, I was inspired by Marian and her accomplishments. While her
inspiration spans beyond gender, she has been for me and will remain a special
role model for women of science. I was fortunate to meet Dr. Pettibone at
the special symposium held in her honor in Denver, Colorado. I was working on
my thesis and Kristian encouraged me to present a paper for the conference,
which I did. During a break after my presentation, I had a special experience
meeting Dr. Pettibone. She had kind words of encouragement and expressed
interest in my work, and while we were talking it was announced that it was
time to take the group picture. As we walked to the back of the room, I
started to veer away to stand in the back where I felt I belonged, but she
touched my arm and had me stand next to her. Later when the picture was
developed, Kristian asked me how I had managed to stand in that position - I
think he wanted to make sure I understood how fortunate I was - indeed at the
time I had felt so privileged. Her inspiration to me, as I gather for many
others, stems from her qualities not only as a substantial contributor to
science, but also as a person who gave encouragement to others.
With fond memories,
Karen Green
