Position opening

Director of the Marseille Oceanology Center 
(Centre d’Océanologie de Marseille – COM), 
France, “Observatory of Sciences of the Universe” (OSU)

The Centre d’Océanologie de Marseille is seeking 
a new director to start October 1, 2006. The 
position is available for 5 years with possibility for a single renewal term.

The Centre d’Océanologie de Marseille (COM) is 
supported in part by the Université de la 
Méditerranée, and by the CNRS (Centre National de 
la Recherche Scientifique). The Center is located 
on the Campus of Luminy and at the marine station 
of Endoume (member of the MARS European network of marine stations).

Research areas are marine biology, marine 
microbiology, marine biogeochemistry, and 
physics. The COM takes part in the “competitivity 
pole” MER-PACA and of several European networks 
of excellence. Over 250 persons are working at 
the COM, including researchers, professors, 
administrative staff, technicians and PhD 
students. The center is divided into three 
research units and one service unit. Two 
additional laboratories belonging to IRD 
(Institut de Recherche pour le Développement) are 
currently hosted at the Station Marine d'Endoume. 
Researches are based either on fundamental or finalised topics.

The COM also largely participates in training and 
education through several programs, a BS 
(Licence) in Ocean Sciences, a professional 
Master in Environment and Economics, and a Master 
of Sciences in Oceanography (with three 
specialities: marine biology and ecology, 
oceanography and marine biogeochemistry, and physical oceanography).
Minimum qualifications: PhD in sciences and 
management experience, very good communication 
skills; candidates should have a good knowledge 
of French educational and research systems. No 
nationalities limitations. Applications from 
female and foreign candidates are welcome.

statement of their project for the future development the COM.
