PhD fellowship in zoological systematics

REF NR B311 3755/05 – Marine Ecology

Deadline: 1st of March 2006

The research school of the Swedish Taxonomy Initiative invites
applications for a PhD fellowship in the field of zoological
systematics. We advertise for a biologist with a B.Sc./M.Sc. or
equivalent degree and interests to undertake intense research
training. The fellow will be based at Tjärnö Marine Biological
Laboratory, Department of Marine Ecology, Göteborg University,
Sweden. The fellowship is financed by the Swedish Taxonomy Initiative
and is a part of the recently launched research school in systematics.

The fellowship is expected to start during spring 2006. Teaching
assignments may fill up to 20% of the fellows’ time and will hence
extend the fellowship from 4 to 5 years.

Taxonomy and Phylogeny of scale-worms (Aphroditiformia, Polychaeta,
Annelida)

The research assignment will involve a systematic and taxonomic
investigation of scale-worms including both field- and laboratory
work. The fellow is expected to acquire a solid expertise of the
group as well as in methods of modern systematics. Molecular
biological techniques will be combined with morphological studies
including various microscopical techniques. Previous knowledge in
systematic theory, experience with molecular biological and/or
microscopical techniques, as well as methods of phylogenetic analysis
i an advantage. The fellow will be based at Tjärnö Marine Biological
Laboratory. However, a substantial part of the research will take
place in the field and therefore we expect the student to be able to
work for some periods in other places.

The fellow will be supervised by F. Pleijel (Tjärnö Marine
Biological Laboratory, Strömstad) and A. Nygren (Department of
Zoology, Göteborg).
