I met Ed only once but we corresponded over the years, and I imagine my
experience of his personality is typical of his many far-distant
contacts in the world of worms. It was always a pleasure to receive
emails from Ed. They were usually stirring something along to do with
his sipunculid projects and had a trusting faith in my abilities to make
things happen. And if they didn't then Ed would be back, and sure
enough, eventually the desired thing would occur. Also he would share
things that struck him as absurd or of mutual interest, and make cryptic
comments on Annelida postings that brightened my day. As we know Ed had
a bad hand dealt to him in mid career with the gradual loss of his
eyesight, but, with help, he worked on in a remarkable fashion, and
never lost his interest in matters sipunculan or his positive outlook on
life. I don't think I could have done the same, and I am left with a
memory of a lovely man who just got on with living despite the odds
stacked against him.
