Dear colleagues
Hello my name is Maigualida Ricoy and I am PhD student in the Department of
Ecology and Zoology of the University of Vigo (Spain) under the supervision of
Dr. Jorge Dominguez.
A main part of my research project is the study of genetic variation of the
earthworm complex Allolobophora caliginosa; this is an earthworm species that
lives in natural ecosystems and agroecosystems of paleartic region; it is
highly polymorphic and it includes amphimictic and parthenogenetic populations,
resulting in a very controversial taxonomic position. The aim of my work is to
apply phylogenetic methods based on morphological and molecular characters to
delimitate the “real” species included in the complex.
In order to get a significant sampling matrix I need to compile a wide number of
populations of this very common earthworm all through out their zone of
distribution, i. e., the paleartic region.
Many of the researchers involved in soil ecology and carrying out different
research projects may have the opportunity to find populations of this
earthworm during their sampling programmes. And this could be very very helpful
for my study. I would be very happy if you, somebody from your group or some
colleague that you know could help me, sending mature earthworms to my lab. If
you are not able to recognize the species it does not matter (at least in
pastures and agroecosystems they should be almost the most common earthworms).
Earthworms from forest ecosystems are also welcome.
If you are willing to help me, you can send the worms alive with soil or in
alcohol 100% to my lab at this address:
