Angela,

You should try staining your cirratulid specimens with methyl green (MG) and see if there are definitive staining patterns to separate out species. See Blake (1996), Dean and Blake 2007, 2009), Elias and Rivero (2009) for application of MG staining. I also refer you to the website of the Southern California Association of Marine Invertebrate Taxonomists (SCAMIT) at www.scamit.org and click on the taxonomic toolbox header. Within Annelida:Polychaeta:Cirratulidae you will find several voucher sheets for local Southern California described and provisional species with color images of MG staining patterns as examples.

Good luck with this troublesome group!!

See everyone in Lecce!!

Hello Angela,
I´m working in Mediterranean coast and I've the same difficulties as you to
identificate cirratulidae speciess. For North-Atlantic speciess you can get
the paper called "A provisional update to identification of UK
Cirratulidae", made by Mr. Tim Worsfold. You can find it online in this
address:
www.scamit.org/.../Family%20Cirratulidae/Cirratulidae%202006%20Dove%20Lab%20England%20Workshop.pdf
I think it's very complete. In it you can find another articles mentioned
for cirratulidae indentification. I hope it'll help you.

Good luck.
Miguel Royo
