Connecticut has so many options for great field trips. Join us!
Walking tour of Yale's Museums-Explore the city and campus architecture, major monuments, and the collections of The Cushing Brain Institute, Yale Collection of Musical Instruments, Yale University Art Gallery and other collections.
Connecticut Geology-Take a trip through the Triassic Connecticut Rift Valley, including the well-known dinosaur footprints at Dinosaur State Park.
Bird Watching-Join Peabody Museum staff for a day of bird-watching (and other wildlife) of Connecticut's shoreline and some amazing upland sites. Habitats to be visited include beach, salt marsh, black spruce bog and mixed hardwood forest, and basalt ridge and rocky ledge.
Botany field trips are co-sponsored by the Consortium for Northeastern Herbaria and include:
Plant-life of Traprock Ridges-unique habitats with rare plants along ancient lava flows which now formed tilted ridges across the Connecticut River Valley
Botany of Northwestern Connecticut-a wide variety of plants and geomorphologic settings, including calcareous wetlands, uplands, and floodplains, poor fens, and Connecticut's highest elevations
Marine Algae of Southern New England-exploring rocky headlands and sandy beaches along the Connecticut coastline to see some of the region's diverse marine algae
We also have three workshops:
Georeferencing-A two day workshop, led by experts from University of California, Berkeley and Tulane University, the Georeferencing Workshop will cover tools and techniques to correctly interpret textual location data into spatial descriptions that can be used in mapping and analyses. Participants will learn the fundamentals of georeferencing best practices with a combination of lectures and hands-on exercises, including paper maps, the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator, GEOLocate, BioGeomancer and online exercises.
Forecasting the Future of Natural History Museums & Collections-Led by Elizabeth Merritt, the Founding Director of the American Association of Museums' Center for the Future of Museums, this one day workshop will provide museum practitioners with a basic introduction to futures studies and the techniques of forecasting, as applied to the challenges facing natural history museums and collections.
Stabilize This!-Seven presenters from different disciplines will discuss approaches to stabilization challenges for several collection types, giving tips to deal with some of the issues frequently found in preserving archive, herbaria, paleontology, entomology and archaeology/ethnology collections. Participants will have opportunity to practice with preservation materials appropriate for triage and their long-term implications will be discussed.
