Hi all,
Geoff asked about Pectinaria tubes from deeper waters. I have seen individuals collected off San Onofre, N. San Diego County, CA from as shallow as 8 m, in coarser sandy sediments, with tubes constructed of coarser grained sands in a single "brick" layer. During our POTW monitoring program in Southern California we have collected Pectinaria californiensis as deep as 300 m in fine sediments. In fact our higher reported abundances are from our 150m and 60m stations. The highest recorded abundance of 8140/m2, occurred at Sta 7B, 150m, in 1989. It is just up coast from the outfall system at 60m depth. The tubes are constructed very similarly to shallower water individuals in the typical cone shape, but with smaller sand grain particles. I examined an unoccupied tube from Sta 5A, 300m, collected this past July. It is orange in color, typical of tubes locally, with fine grained quartzite sand particles and a few bits of black refracted detritus particles in the single "brick" layer matrix. I see no evidence of a double sand layer in the construction. See the attached images of this tube.
