Tvärminne Zoological Station at the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Helsinki, invites applications for two fixed-term senior scientist positions in (1) Marine ecosystem dynamics and long-term change, and (2) Marine benthic biodiversity.
We are looking for two ecologists to be part of a growing team of researchers that explore the structure and function of marine/Baltic Sea ecosystems under environmental stress. Central to this effort is to build a general understanding of the consequences of changes in biodiversity and its consequences for ecosystem functions and services.
The successful applicants should have PhD's in Ecology, Marine Ecology or Ecosystems ecology or related disciplines, have strong publication records commensurate with experience, and a demonstrated potential to obtain external research funds. While individual research interests could span from local to global scales, we are looking for candidates to strengthen research in the following areas:
(1) Marine ecosystem dynamics and long-term change
The candidate should have strong numerical skills and expertise in modelling, synthesis of long-term ecosystem data or ecosystem-scale responses to environmental stress. Areas of expertise could include modelling, timeseries analyses, food-web modelling or stable isotope ecology.
(2) Marine benthic biodiversity
The candidate should have expertise in the functional biodiversity of seafloor habitats. Areas of expertise could include biodiversity ecosystem function research or spatial ecology/metacommunity ecology.
The successful candidates will be expected to develop and maintain an active research and publication program, advise graduate students, and engage in inter-disciplinary research and public outreach.
The positions are located at Tvärminne Zoological Station (TZS), which offers excellent laboratory and field support for environmental research. TZS belongs to the University of Helsinki. It is a marine station located at the entrance to the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea. It serves as a centre for a large variety of high quality biological research, carries out environmental monitoring, and offers facilities for visiting scientists, field courses, symposia and seminars. The station was established in 1902 and thus provides good background data for studying longterm environmental change. In addition, it is situated in a nature reserve, where only research and teaching activities are permitted. Annually, the station is used by 250 - 300 scientists, conducting studies in ecology, evolutionary biology, physical oceanography and marine chemistry. In winter, the station is an excellent site for sea ice studies. The station is well equipped to support experimental and field research with a variety of assets including a research vessel, small boats, scientific diving and instrumentation.
The positions are full-time research positions for a 3-year period, with a possibility for an extension. The total monthly salary at the beginning of the contract is EUR 3444 - 4639,26, depending on the experience of the candidate.
Electronic applications should be sent to: alf.norkko from helsinki.fi<mailto:alf.norkko from helsinki.fi>. This search will continue until the position is filled. Review of applications will begin November 25, 2013
