I met Gottfried a number of times over the years while visiting the NHM in London. He was indeed a very nice and courteous guy. I am very sorry to hear this sad news.

Subject: [Annelida] Gottfried Pillai

I am sorry to have to inform you all that Gottfried died of a heart attack last night - he had been ill for a long time.

You will know that Gottfried had a long career in polychaetes (first publishing in 1958!), at first describing some of the Indo-Pacific fauna and later concentrating on the serpulids and spirorbids. The long gap in his polychaete publications list occurred when he was working for the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations as a fish farming expert.

Gottfried was a good man who wanted to help others. I shall miss him.

Alex.
