Thanks Jim for letting everyone know. I last saw Mary at the Portland Polychaete Conference you organized in 2007. In recent years, she has been difficult to contact and I know a number of us have been concerned for her.

I first met Mary at the 1st Polychaete Conference in Sydney in 1983. She was like a whirlwind and no-one could get a word in edgeways! Cricket indeed* :-) Overflowing with information, she was a true force-of-nature. Like many others I would correspond with her about some polychaete question and would receive 10 pages (with sketches) by return. The 2nd Polychaete Conference in Copenhagen was her finest hour. She was in her element, and I and others will remember being invited back to her house ... as if she didn't have enough to do. The Proceedings were a real labour of love and they duly arrived, complete with an index.

Mary will be long remembered and missed. It has been strange attending recent Polychaete Conferences without her being there.

Andy

Dear colleagues,

I have learned via Les Watling and others at the Darling Marine Center, the
sad news that Dr. Mary Petersen passed away yesterday morning (7 July)
after a short battle with cancer.

I have many memories of Mary's friendship, generosity and willingness to
share her extensive knowledge of polychaetes to whomever needed it. I am
certain that there will many memories of her posted in the days to follow.

Jim
