I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Mary Petersen. I never had the good fortune to meet Mary personally, but we corresponded frequently. I am not a polychaete biologist, nor have I ever attended a polychaete conference. Mary didn't know me from Adam. But some years ago I was working with two small crab species that occupy the tubes of the polychaete worm Chaetopterus in the N. Gulf of Mexico. The worm is identified as Chaetopterus variopedatus in much of the literature, but I was not sure and contacted Mary for her professional opinion. That led to a series of correspondences, my sending her specimens for her study etc. Mary wasn't convinced to the true identity of the worm, so at her advice it was identified in the final paper as Chaetopterus sp. During our years of corresponding, for every one-page letter I wrote to Mary, she returned pages on pages in reply. Some of her remarks dealt with polychaetes, but she commented too on her philosophy of life, the flowers in her garden, and much more. I greatly appreciated how she shared her knowledge and expertise with someone she had never met, and was so hoping that one day our paths would cross. I am so sorry I missed knowing her, and wanted to add my comments for the benefit of her colleagues who knew her and appreciated her as an outstanding scientist and fellow human being.
