Dear all,
Andy's short characterization of Mary Petersen, based on meeting her during
the 1st IPC Sydney, is to the point and matches my first impression. I had
to miss the 2nd IPC in Copenhagen (gave priority to an expedition to the
Cape Verde Islands), but could visit Mary in her home and annexe (the
Zool.Mus. Copenhagen) in 2000, when I had my second chance to do some work
there. She was almost invisible/unfindable in her room, hidden behind all
kinds of cupboards in and outside that cubicle. And indeed Geoff, she had
unusual working hours, even cooked a meal for us in the lab. Floyd
Sandford's contribution too characterizes Mary, a short note generally led
to long answers, and not only on polychaetes, but also on nature, garden,
or whatever. One of my last exchanges with her, a couple of years ago, was
on *A Dutch Village. It only has the canals, no roads.* She sent me a
series of photographs, which I recognized as being from Giethoorn (check it
on Google Earth, it is amazing). *Chaetopterus* . . . . not *variopedatus .
. .*, indeed my suspect identification of a specimen collected by me in
Ambon (Indonesia) was corrected by Mary. Her extensive knowledge of
polychaetes already was mentioned by Jim.
