What a sad way to start the week!
I will always fondly remember my two months visit to the Smithsonian in summer 2011. I met Kristian at the IPC in Lecce in 2010 for the first time in person. I talked to him about my research, and he invited me to the Smithsonian to study polychaetes of the vast collection of the National Museum. He covered the cost of my flight, and while in Washington DC invited me to join him and Len to the theater and celebrate his 76th birthday. I particularly enjoyed the many little anecdotes he told me about famous polychaetologist, ranging from earlier scientists (e.g. Chamberlin, Annenkova) to more recent ones (e.g. Hartman, Pettibone).
He will be greatly missed as a person and as a scientist!

I have no words. Kristian had a special place in my heart and in that of
Cristina Gambi, the italian "students". We met Kristian at the beginning
of our career and we later shared with him wonderful experiences, always
following his valuable opinion.
We will miss him too much
