Dear everyone,
I am overwhelmed with sadness at the news of Kristian's sudden death. It is
hard to believe that we will will never again enjoy his great wisdom,
energy, wit, warmth, and laughter. My thoughts are with dear Len.
We got to know Kristian and Len through SICB (ASZ back then), but I got to
know Kristian well when I took the polychaete course in Friday Harbor in
1989, just before I started my Ph.D. I learned so much from him, the man
who wrote 'The Pink Book' -- it was an amazing experience! I was fortunate
to spend a year working with Kristian as a predoctoral student at the
Smithsonian in 1993. That was a wonderful year of worms and worldly living
-- whether Kristian was guiding me at the microscope with some valuable
type specimen, or patiently explaining the nuances of segment numbering, or
Kristian and Len were hosting a lively dinner party, or we were all arguing
about systematics or politics. Pat and I felt so welcomed and always looked
forward to reunions at SICB meetings or IPC gatherings, which will not be
the same without Kristian. The loss of such a great colleague, mentor, and
friend is devastating.
