Hi

It is unfortunate that this happened, for it is clear that Knight-Jones &
Walker (1972) believed Knight-Jones (1973) was (or was to be) published in
1972, prior to their paper. They must have had good reason to believe this
as they correctly cite the journal, volume, part and page numbers of the
1973 paper, although ³four new subgenera² was omitted from the title.

A clue to why this might have happened is given on p. 4 of the pdf
supplied by yourself "Parts will appear at irregular intervals as they
become ready.² I have looked at our copy of volume 24 (1972-1973) and
this is very evident (see attached). So, Volume 24 part 4 containing the
Knight-Jones & Walker cited "Knight-Jones (1972b)" paper was not
officially published until 12 March 1973, after parts 5, 6 and 7 !

Relevant parts of the Code (www.iczn.org/iczn/index.jsp) seem to be:

13.3. Genus-group names. To be available, every new genus-group name
published after 1930 (except those proposed for collective groups or
ichnotaxa) must, in addition to satisfying the provisions of Article 13.1,
be accompanied by the fixation of a type species in the original
publication [Art. 68] or be expressly proposed as a new replacement name
(nomen novum) [Art. 67.8].

21.4. Date incorrect. If the date of publication specified in a work is
found to be incorrect, the earliest day on which the work is demonstrated
to be in existence as a published work is to be adopted. In the absence of
evidence as to day, the provisions of Article 21.3 apply.

21.8. Advance distribution of separates and preprints. Advance
distribution of separates or preprints affects date of publication as
specified by the following criteria:
21.8.1. Before 2000, an author who distributed separates in advance of the
specified date of publication of the work in which the material was
published thereby advanced the date of publication.

For 13.3 ‹ This is done in Knight-Jones & Walker (1972:35) ³Subgenus
Dextralia Knight-Jones, 1972b). Type. Spirorbis (Paradexiospira)
falklandicus Pixell (1913). Coiling dextral; blade of collar setae lacking
cross-striations; otherwise as above²
[i.e. As Protolaeospira]

Knight-Jones (1973: 237) gives more explanation
³This species [i.e. Spirorbis (Paradexiospira) falklandicus Pixell, 1913]
is thus quite different from the type species of Paradexiospira, i.e.
P. vitrea (Fabricius, 1780), of which numerous live specimens from
Cornwall, U.K. Were examined (kindly provided by Mr Hedley Brown.) In
P.vitrea the eggmass is attached to the tube and not to the animal.
Clearly the subantarctic species cannot remain in the genus
Paradexiospira. It has recently been shown that the direction of coiling
is not very useful in distinguishing between genera in Spirorbinae
(Knight-Jones, 1972). It is quite a useful character, however, at
subgeneric level, so it seems best to institute herewith a new subgenus
Dextralia, within the genus Protolaeospira, with P.(D.) falklandica as the
type species."

For 21.4 ‹ I have no evidence that the 12 March 1973 date is incorrect

For 21.8 ‹ I have no evidence that this happened with the 1973 publication

Therefore, I would say these should be cited either (by priority; though
as you say the new subgenus designation was not used)

Subgenus Dextralia Knight-Jones & Walker 1972

Or (by priority and intent)

Subgenus Dextralia Knight-Jones, P. in Knight-Jones & Walker 1972 (re
Knight-Jones 1973)

And, in both cases, Protolaeospira ( Dextralia ) stalagmia Knight-Jones &
Walker 1972

You could explain the confusion in your paper
