Dear colleagues

We have several ideas about honouring Kristian Fauchald at the 12th International Polychaete Conference in Cardiff this coming August (http://www.museumwales.ac.uk/ipc2016/).

Last year's First International Polychaete Day initiated by Linda Ward and Karen Osborn on the 1st July 2015 - the day that would have been Kristian's 80th birthday - was a brilliant success and rapidly generated a wealth of articles, reminiscences and photos about Kristian, his life, his influence, and his contributions to the careers of so many others. This has been truly wonderful. Linda wrote a lovely piece 'Remembering Kristian Fauchald' (http://nmnh.typepad.com/no_bones/2015/07/remembering-kristian-fauchald.html), Kirk Fitzhugh wrote a heartfelt article 'On Kristian Fauchald: A Personal Retrospective' that he posted on Facebook and via Annelida, and Sergio Salazar-Vallejo wrote a personal eulogy which he posted to Annelida also, and later published (http://revistas.ucr.ac.cr/index.php/rbt/article/view/22807/23275). Fred Pleijel & Greg Rouse wrote a short obit for WoRMS (http://www.marinespecies.org/news.php?p=show&id=4152), and we know that many others also wrote about their connections.

A summary of much of the activity can be found here https://storify.com/CardiffCurator/international-polychaete-day

So, we propose producing an 'informal' publication about Kristian based around, or incorporating, these or similar contributions - plus additional ones, and lots of photos (with associated descriptive legends/text).

What we envisage is a 'straightforward' compilation which would not be constrained by any strict journal style or 'subject' category, and require minimal editing. There could be both individual and group contributions (of whatever length) on people's connection to Kristian at various points, or throughout, his life. We think Kristian as remembered by various friends, colleagues, collaborators (and hopefully family also) together would make an attractive and interesting publication.

While we see the core contributions coming from those closest to him, there will be many who will have memories, anecdotes and photographs, or a piece of correspondence. Style can be whatever desired by the writer, from anecdote ... to 'essay' ... to more 'paper-like' ... Indeed, a contrast in style and length would make it a very distinctive thing.

As said earlier, we would want it to be richly augmented by colour photographs. Some contributions could simply be a photo or two from a meeting, get together, fieldwork or event - serious work, or just fun - or a few sentences reminiscing about something Kristian did or said.

So, please let me know if you are interested in contributing copy to this. We have a source of funding for the printing.

All conference attendees would receive this in their conference packs! We would send copies to all other major contributors who could not attend the conference.

We would like to get contributions by April 28, so we can plan things, and obviously we would require good quality images (ideally 300 ppi) suitable for printing together with any associated information of occasion, place and date to put them in context. Photos should also belong to the writer, or the writer should have permission from the photographer to use them!

All the very best

Andy, on behalf of the organising committee
