Just a heads up if you are writing something on Spinther, and relying on what is in some textbooks & monographs regarding common wisdom on the origin of the name Spinther wireni.

We have worked out what the statuses are, and we are not the first to do so. Spinther vegae Augener, 1928 is valid. It is the (mostly overlooked) name Augener suggested for Spinther arcticus (Sars) sensu Wirén. Wirén did not create a homonym to Sars species, he simply misidentified his specimen as it, and Spinther wireni Hartman, 1948 is a superfluous replacement name for the non-existent homonym and should not be used.

Yamamoto & Imajima (1985) had sunk S. wireni long ago in favour of S. vegae. In more recent times Parapar et al (2012, Fauna Iberica v36) also use S. vegae as valid.

Here is the WoRMS record for Spinther wireni now where the further details can be seen:

I have only the hard copy of Augener, 1928 in Fauna Arctica and cannot make a pdf for anyone due to technical difficulties with handling its large format.

Cheers,

Geoff

Spinther vegae Augener was in WoRMS, but quarantined (hidden) for reasons unknown (beyond being unauthenticated). Is now visible :-). Is not in Hartman catalogue. I have the hard copy of Augener at work and will check it tomorrow. Gagaev may be the source of the synonymy, although he refers to Jirkov 2001: 243 entry on S citrinus.
