It is really sad and I am really upset with myself. I was supposed to give him a call over the weekend (I talked with him on phone about one month ago to cheer him up) but was busy with interviewing faculty candidates. I wrote to Lisa yesterday and told her that I will call Don this week.

Don told me how to run toxicity assay with Capitella while I was doing master degree in Chinese Academy is Science in 1983. Since then, he considered me as one of his students. Over the last few years, we have been collaborating on proteomics of his worms and published several papers together. I always visited him on each trip to USA. Too emotional for me to write more at this point!

Really sad.

> Sad news. Don Reish passed away yesterday afternoon after spending a week in the ICU. He had been suffering from congestive heart failure for a while & initially had a good prognosis. However, there were various complications over the last few months, the latest being a collapsed artery. Don is survived by his wife Janice, kids Chris, Don, and Lisa, and the rest of his extended family.

He set a grand example of life-long enthusiasm & passion for worms, for science, for teaching, for communication, and so much more. Don mentored many students - one person mentioned to me that he was #64 - throughout his academic career. One of the reasons for SCAMIT's success over the years was the fact that most of the founding members came out of Don's lab inspired with a solid love of taxonomy and knowing the value of working together to achieve their goals.

> Years ago Don wrote a memoir in a series of short installments which were published in the SCAMIT newsletter. It ended in 2001, with Don at age 76 looking forward to the IPC 7 in Iceland. Kirk Fitzhugh & Larry Lovell compiled the 22 installments into one document. This can be found on the IPC 13 website under his photo: nhm.org/ipc13<http://nhm.org/ipc13>

> Prior to the Wales Conference Don approached Bruno Pernet about the possibility of holding the 13th Conference at Long Beach, duplicating Pat's feat of hosting the 1st and 11th conferences at the Australia Museum. Bruno agreed to lead the effort & recruited Kirk, Larry, Christine Whitcraft, and me. We all agreed that honoring Don for his accomplishments over his long career would be a part of IPC 13. It still will be, although sadly without the guest of honor.
