Dear colleagues, especially Lena,

At my desk in Naturalis  this morning, opening my mail, it took me some time to digest the sad message of Sasha's last struggle. Though Alexander and I met in person only twice, we started exchanging reprints in the 80-ties and an irregular correspondence since the 90-ties. Following in the wake of the Knight-Joneses, his knowledge of spirorbins was the main reason that I never even tried to identify these small critters. I was happy leaving them in his capable hands. We joined forces once. With evolving means of communication like e-mail, Skype and Facebook, I sometimes was given an unexpected view on his person, his personal feelings, his sense of humour, and problems in life. What's left is memory.

He was the last person on this planet who really and completely understood spirorbins - the rest of us, his co-authors, just pretended. Sasha and I published 2 books and many serpulid papers together. Recently we published a field guide on Arctic serpulids - it is available for sale now and is the best tribute to my dear friend. I will do my best to finish and publish the manuscripts we worked on together, but I feel lost now.
