Hi again,
PS: I just noticed this follow-up paper to Meier, and think it's quite useful as a demonstration case of what goes on - here in entomology. They analysed one year of insect research (567 papers published in nine entomological journals). Insects are much more used and investigated, particularly in applied research (pests, etc) than annelids are, and there's orders of magnitude more species to correctly identify and link to taxonomy.
Packer, L., Monckton, S.K., Onuferko, T.M. & Ferrari, R.R. (2018): Validating taxonomic identifications in entomological research. Insect Conservation and Diversity, 11, 1-12. https://doi.org/10.1111/icad.12284 [open access]
Quote: "The overwhelming impression we get from assessing entomological research published in 2016 is that taxonomic methodology is presented in a sloppy fashion such as would not be tolerated for any other part of the methods section in a scientific paper."
I get the feeling our main concerns have been enough raised in print already. To get published on the topic there would have to be an new angle. Meanwhile we can perhaps promote these articles to journals and editors and authors in our fields of interest, particularly when acting as referees.
Geoff
