Hi Izwandy and all,
Google Groups looks good and is free, but it seems to me it is highly controlling of the way people access their lists, for example you need a gmail account to join. Does anyone belong to a mail-only Google Groups list that works well and they feel comfortable with? I think it would not be a first choice of where to go. For one thing it would be difficult to move there without losing most of our current membership. Also reading the Wikipedia account of Google Groups it seems Google has at times downgraded the service they provide without warning.
I've looked a bit more at the background to some other lists I subscribe to. It seems ideally we need someone to volunteer to take over Annelida who is currently at a university or organisation that allows staff to set up a mailing list related to their interests (universities would be the most likely to allow this), and already has list software running that serve several lists, with some of those lists being allowed to be of a general nature, not solely to do with activities on campus (a lot of organisations will be running just local-issue-only lists). Check to see what lists are running at your organisation. We need someone enthusiastic about annelids who is in an established position, and likely to continue at their organisation for several more years. If this fits someone out there, and their organisation allows creation of new lists with outsider membership please get in touch.
Thanks,
Geoff

Hi Geoff et al.,
I'm not an internet savy, but I know yahoo and gmail have mailing group service. Can we set up Annelida using this platform? If it comes with reasonable cost, perhaps we can discuss during IPC Long Beach on financial sustainability.
I personally gain a lot from Annelida list, and hope we can still have it regardless the platform.
Izwandy

Subject: [Annelida] Annelida list seeks a new home
Hi all,
You will have seen the message from Don Gilbert that his Bionet system is closing down in April if there is no last-minute white-knight offer to host it all elsewhere. This rescue is looking unlikely, and it means Annelida list will end also.
However, I hope we can find a new home for Annelida and continue the communication, and eventually (not too far off) I would like to hand over Annelida to someone else to run. There are various options for continuing it, but by far the best would be to find another listserver system running the simple GNU-Mailman free software we are so used to, with unmoderated posting, and no advertisements. If you know of an organization that still runs science-based Mailman lists, and has room for another list, please let me know.
Meantime it's hats off to Don Gilbert for the amazing facility provided to the worm-worker group over the last 24 years. I certainly never expected that sort of longevity, which began within a few years from the first spread of internet email for general use. Thanks so much Don.
The very useful complete Annelida archive from 1995 to 2019 is currently at http://www.bio.net/bionet/mm/annelida/ and Don tells me he hopes to continue to make the archive available via another host.
I will keep you all informed. Please stay subscribed. We currently have about 600 members.
Best wishes,
Geoff Read (Annelida list owner & founder)
