We also use carbenicillin instead of vancomycin.  An alternative source for
inexpensive carb is Sigma (St. Louis).  The price in the catalog is very high
($331 for 10 g for the plant tissue culture grade).  Several of us at Davis
got together to get quotes on a large order and were given a price of $3/gram
for an order of 500 g.  It should be stable in powder form for several 
years so you might try this.  Just ask them for a quote, you don't need to
prompt them with a price, you may get it cheaper than we did.
