We wish to underscore several points made recently in this forum by Sakti
Pramanik (MSU) and Randy Scholl (OSU):

AATDB and AIMS are independently funded projects for the development and
administration of Arabidopsis database resources. However, ALL DATA
COLLECTED AND ENTERED BY THE TWO GROUPS WILL BE SHARED -- which means that
researchers will be submitting their data only once, not twice. WE ARE
COOPERATING ON THIS AND MANY OTHER ISSUES.

Although the two databases will share the same underlying information,
they differ in a variety of ways: in the type and design of database
(AATDB is object-like and AIMS is relational), how users access the
information (AATDB will be distributed freely to run on your local
computer and AIMS will run on one computer in Michigan with remote
access), the design objectives (AATDB emphasizes genetic and physical map
information and AIMS emphasizes stock information and ordering -- however,
all information is in both databases), and in the details of their
interfaces. Both groups are confident that the two projects will result
in complementary rather than merely redundant resources, giving users more
tools for looking at the same body of information.

If you wish to be on the AATDB mailing list where we will soon begin
discussion of the internals of the database please send a message to:
