This note to is further clarify the Arabidopsis database
activities which have been discussed in the past few days.

USDA, NIH, and DOE are, with NSF, jointly funding a national
Arabidopsis research effort. The funding for the OSU/MSU stock
center is an NSF grant, with monies for the grant coming from all
four agencies.

USDA, and in particular ARS (Agricultural Research Service), is
providing funds for both the OSU stock center and related
database work at MSU. ARS is explicitly funding the Arabidopsis
map work at Massachusetts General Hospital (Howard Goodman's
lab). ARS considers the two projects to be complimentary, not
duplicative. ARS is not funding any genome sequence database
work, as Doug Bigwood has pointed out, since there is one
international effort in this area (GenInfo/Genbank/EMBL), and a
separate Arabidopsis or any other plant specifies genome sequence
would not, in the opinion of ARS project managers, be a
productive use of limited US government funds.
