Arabidopsis Election

Those of you who have read the brochures about the Arabidopsis
genome project distributed by NSF will be familiar with the notion
that there is something called the "Multinational Steering
Committee". This was necessarily an ad hoc committee which was
established to try and forge international collaboration among
Arabidopsis researchers. This newsgroup was initiated as an
initiative of the Committee. Similarly, the formation and
coordination of the Resource Centers was fostered by the Committee.
The committee has 3 members from North America, 2 from continental
Europe, 1 from UK, Australia and Japan. At the time the Committee
was established it was agreed that membership would be on a 3 year
rotating basis, and that members would be elected by National

The time has come to transform the US contingent of the committee
to a group of ELECTED (rather than self-appointed) representatives.
The current North American contingent (Chris Somerville, Elliot
Meyerowitz and Howard Goodman) believe that there is a need for an
elected National (Continental would be a more accurate word here)
Committee of about 6 members. The National Committee would then
designate three members from this committee to serve on the
Multinational committee for fixed terms. Since it appears that
most labs are connected to this newsgroup, we propose to have the
nomination and election by email. Here is the proposal:

1. Nominations: Please send up to six names of nominees to Elliot
Meyerowitz (meyerowitze at starbase1.caltech.edu). Elliot will compile
the list of candidates (to include only those who have actually
agreed to stand for office). Nominations should be in by Feb 28.

2. Elections: Following posting of the list of candidates, there
will be a two week voting period. Dave Kristofferson (i.e., someone
outside the loop) will collect and count the (secret ballot) votes
at the following address:

                biovote at genbank.bio.net

Dave will count only one vote from each email address within North
America. Please do NOT use the "reply" function on your email
system otherwise your vote will probably end up being broadcast to
the whole system.
