Thoughts on being a faculty member (intended to be humorous):
1. I find I lose an average of 1 night's sleep per month per person
in my lab. I don't know how people with large labs manage it.
2. Your entire life is spent outside some door waiting for a committee
to judge you. First its your student exams, then applying for
postdocs & faculty positions, then waiting for tenure, promotions,
and raises, as well as grant panels.
3. When you first start in the lab, you do things like make media and
wash dishes. When you are a graduate student or a postdoc, you
do actual experiments, and have others making media and doing the
dishes for you. When you get to be a faculty member, things
reverse. Now I find the most useful things I can do in the lab
between meetings and other obligations are to put dishes away,
start the pipet washer, etc.
