A two year postdoctoral position is open immediately to work on molecular
approaches to potato breeding. Candidates should be citizens of a
developing country in Latin America and be interested in eventually
mediating technology transfer to improve potato breeding in the Andean
region. Candidates should have a strong background in either plant
genetics or molecular biology. The project entails the development of
chromosomal markers for introgression of valuable traits from wild species
into cultivated potato. The goal is to develop techniques that are simple
and applicable to developing countries. This collaborative project
involves the University of Washington in Seattle, Wa., USDA-ARS and
Washington State University at Prosser, Wa., and the International Potato
Center (CIP) in Lima, Peru. The researcher will be based in Seattle, but
interact with scientists at the other locations. 
	The postdoctoral will also gain experience in plant genetic
engineering by participating in a second project. The objective of this
project is to reduce variability in transgene expression using putative
chromosomal boundary elements, such as Scaffold Attachment Regions. The
effect of these elements will be tested and compared in potato and in
