UC DAVIS-PACIFIC RIM FOOD AND AGRICULTURAL
BIOTECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE SERIES
MOLECULAR CROP AGRICULTURE FOR THE PACIFIC RIM
HYATT REGENCY HOTEL SACRAMENTO
JUNE 20 - 24, 1992
In June of 1992 the University of California at Davis will host the first in
a series of conferences focusing on Food and Agricultural Biotechnology in
the Pacific Rim. The first conference is entitled "Molecular Agriculture
for the Pacific Rim" and addresses molecular approaches to crop
improvement, disease resistance, food preservation and processing and
includes cutting-edge techniques in plant biotechnology. The
socioeconomic implications of biotechnology research and applications
within the Pacific Rim region, including technology transfer, will also be
addressed. These conference topics are of immediate interest to countries
bordering the Pacific and will provide an opportunity for participants to
develop fruitful interactions with scientists throughout this region. The
primary goal of the meeting is to stimulate serious discussion and debate
on scientific issues, including the potential of biotechnology-based
strategies and obstacles to the exploitation of biotechnology in crop
agriculture especially within this region.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Gurdev Khush, Director, International Rice Research
Institute, Philippines will present a global perspective on how the
techniques of molecular biology will contribute to the future of world
agriculture.
