To Chris Town and anyone else that is interested:
Regarding sources of molecular biological shareware, you can obtain a list of
available software from "Netserv at embl-Heidelberg.de" by typing in the body of
the mail message HELP DOS_SOFTWARE or you can substitute MAC, UNIX or VMS for
DOS to receive the corresponding information. What you will receive is
essentially the instructions for downloading, decoding, and uncompressing
software and a listing (with some descriptions) of the freeware and shareware.
One of these may suit your needs. There are other sources of molecular biology
related software that can be accessed by Internet such as University of Houston
Gene-Server. Send the word HELP in the subject line to "gene-server at bchs.uh.edu"
and you should receive some information on their software collection. You can
contact others sites using Internet from your main frame if it has a TCP/IP
connection essentially providing you with anonymous file transfer protocol or
ftp procedures. You can ask you system manager on how to access and use ftp
sessions. There are also other means of searching and obtaining shareware such
as sending inqueries to "Bio-soft at genbank.bio.net".
I should mention that if you do find a shareware program that you like, please
comply with the request for sending the 10-25$ to the programmers since they
spent a deal of their time (usually spare time) developing these inexpensive
