Applications are sought for a one year postdoctoral fellowship to study
molecular controls in floral determination and differentiation in Gerbera
(Asteraceae: the sunflower family). Preliminary work on determination
factors (MADS box genes) has identified probable downstream differentiation
pathways in corolla development. One such pathway may include the
biosynthesis of pathogen defense compounds. Eventual project goals include
detailed characterization of genes acting at the
determination/differentiation interface, identification of regulatory
relationships that may be useful for bioengineering approaches, and
evolution of the unique Asteraceae inflorescence.
A PhD in Plant Molecular Biology (or the equivalent) is required
(unfortunately, we cannot consider Swedish residents). Experience with
molecular cloning and RNA characterization is a must, and experience with
cDNA libraries and in situ hybridization methods would be very desirable.
Specific research plans will include screening cDNA libraries and
characterizing the expression patterns of genes isolated.
The fellowship will provide a stipendium of 120,000 Swedish kronor (note
that this is tax exempt; additional resources are negotiable depending upon
the circumstances of the applicant). Research funds for the project have
been granted by the Swedish Natural Sciences Research Council. The work
will be performed at the Department of Physiological Botany, Uppsala
University, but as a collaborative effort with the Institute of
Biotechnology, University of Helsinki.
