Root culture in liquid medium

Dear All,
          We have had the occassional appearance of very short hairy roots in 
our root cultures for transformations.  This occurs in both media and on agar. 
 What causes this and how can it be remedied?  What is the best method for 
growing roots in liquid medium?  If anyone has any advice at all we'd be 
really grateful to receive it!
