hand cut sections

Dear Arabidopsis folks:

I would appreciate any advice on cutting hand sections for looking at GUS 
staining patterns in transgenic plants.  Assume minimum familarity with 
microscopy procedures.  How thick should the sections be?  Hand sections 
(using carrot pith?)?  Embedded plants?  If so, is there a preferred 
embedding medium?   We have been looking at whole plants - time to 
take the plunge into the interior.
