POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN MOLECULAR BIOLOGY OF ION PUMPS
AVAILABLE SPRING/SUMMER 1995

COLLEGE PARK, MARYLAND 20742
A research associate position is available to study the
physiological significance of vacuolar-type ATPase isoforms
using molecular approaches. Acidification of endomembrane
compartments by vacuolar-type H+-ATPase is central to many
cellular processes in plants. The proton motive force
generated by the H+-ATPase provides the major driving force
for the uptake and release of ions and metabolites across
the vacuolar membranes, and thus the pump is directly
involved in osmoregulation (Sze et al. 1992, J Bioenerg
Biomembr 24, 371). The major subunits of the enzyme
complex, like the integral 16 kD subunit, are encoded by
multigene families; however it is not known whether the
isoforms differ in their structure, function, regulation and
tissue distribution. One goal is to determine whether V-
ATPase isoforms from Arabidopsis are functionally distinct
and differentially localized using a combination of
biochemical and molecular methods.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in biological sciences with strong
background in molecular biology, cell biology and
biochemistry. Practical experience in molecular biology is
essential.
