Infection of members of the Brassicacae with Plasmodiophora brassicae W. (clubroot)
is of considerable agricultural importance resulting in the formation of a gall as a result
of a re-initiation of cell division in the hypocotyl or root. Gall formation is closely
linked with alterations in plant growth regulators most probably as a result of an
decrease in the auxin:cytokinin ratio; elevated auxin levels are associated with
resistance. This gall acts as a strong sink for carbohydrate reducing yield and can also
damage the vascular system of the plant.

The project aims to identify genes expressed in response to clubroot infection and use
their promoters as a basis for engineering resistance. Initial studies will use the model
system Arabidopsis thaliana as infection of this plant with clubroot is well
characterised at the physiological level and it is amenable to the molecular biological
strategies to be employed. As a member of the Brassica results will be directly
transferable to agriculturally important crops.

A wide variety of physiological, biochemical and molecular techniques will be applied
in this project and full training will be provided. The studentship is for 3 years
commencing on 1st October, 1996. Candidates must possess an upper second class
honours degree (or better). The standard MAFF student stipend will be paid which is
currently 5638 pounds sterling per annum with additional allowances
for dependants.
