I hope many of you in the Arabidopsis are planning to attend the workshop
on transgenic plants at Tuskegee University (USA) in April (20-22)? I
encourage you to please register early.

We have scheduled a new pre-conference lecture by Dr. Ananda Chakrabarty of
University of Chicago at 8 PM, Saturday, April 20 and this will be
immediately after the cocktail starting at 6 PM. Chakrabarty was the first
individual to be ever awarded a patent on a genetically engineered organism
in 1978. The supreme court subsequently upheld a lower court decision
(Diamond v/s Charabarty) in 1980. This led to a new era of intellectual
property protection for biotechnology and catalyzed formation of hundreds
of biotech companies. He was also the first to isolate biodegradative
plasmids in 1972 and has conducted considerable research in bioremediation.
He was the president of International Society of Environmental
Biotechnology.

Looking forward to seeing you in April! Please contact me for further
information.
