Characterization and Manipulation of Genes Regulating Pre-Harvest Sprouting in Wheat.

Applications are invited for two Research Scientist positions at the John Innes Centre and the Institute of Arable Crops Research
(IACR)-Long Ashton, funded by the BBSRC Food and Agricultural Systems Directorates, to study the molecular characterization and
genetic manipulation of pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) in wheat. These posts, one at each site, will develop a novel approach for
molecular genetic analysis and manipulation of crops based on genetic and physiological homologies between cereal species.

Ref: LN6104. A molecular biologist to join a team at IACR-Long Ashton investigating the molecular control of seed embryo dormancy. The
post will involve cloning of genes that regulate PHS, analysis of expression in isolines with differing PHS characteristics, and
manipulation of PHS using the cloned genes in transgenic wheat. For informal enquiries contact Dr. Mike Holdsworth, email:
mike.holdsworth at bbsrc.ac.uk. Information about related projects is available at:
http://www.lars.bbsrc.ac.uk/plantsci/dormancy/dormancy.html

Ref:MDG/105. A molecular geneticist to join a team at JIC investigating genes controlling seed dormancy and PHS in wheat. Activities
will include the isolation of wheat homologues of maize transcription factors, comparative genetic mapping in a range of different
cereal species, and gene tailoring prior to the production and assessment of wheat transgenic lines. For informal enquiries contact
Dr. John Flintham or Dr. Mike Gale (tel 01603 452571, email jeffery at bbsrc.ac.uk) Information about JIC research activities, is
available at: http://www.uea.ac.uk/nrp/jic/ed.htm

Ideally candidates should hold a postgraduate qualification in molecular biology/molecular genetics. The appointments, which are
supperannuable, will be to Pay Band 6 within the salary range £13 951 to £24 174 per annum and are for a fixed term of three years.
For application forms and further details contact: Ref: LN6104, the Personnel Officer, IACR-Long Ashton, Long Ashton, Bristol BS18 9AF
(tel: 01275 392181); ref MDG/105, the Personnel Officer, John Innes Centre, Norwich Research Park, Colney, Norwich NR4 7UH.
IACR-Long Ashton and the John Innes Centre are equal opportunities employers.

The closing date for application is 20 June 1996.
