PhD position in Plant Cell Biology
The position is available immediately. The work will focuss on the
genetic and biochemical characterisation of high chlorophyll fluorescence
mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana involved in the cellular genetic
cross-talk. We have been successfully using the technique of
time-resolved imaging spectroscopy of chlorophyll fluorescence, which
allowed us to isolate 6 fluorescence mutants of A. thaliana plants. We
further identified the defects at protein complex level and classified
them in four groups: PSII mutants, PSI mutants, one intersystem mutant
and a peiotropic mutant (Alexciev et al., 1997). The objective of this
PhD programme is that these mutants be investigated as a means towards
identifying and studying the components involved in the cellular genetic
cross-talk. In the first place, it would be important to identify the
nuclear component(s) which is responsible for the observed defects. This
will shed additional light on the question of nuclear-chloroplast
communication. Yet another intriguing question is the possible
involvement of the mitochondrial genome and its products in
photosynthesis. This issue will be addressed as well.
The successful applicant is supposed to have a solid background in
biology. An experience with molecular biology methods is desirable.
