<fontfamily><param>Times</param>Two post-doctoral research positions
are available in August 1997 or

when a suitable candidate is identified. The individuals will join a
team at CEPRAP (Center for Engineering Plants for Resistance against
Pathogens), a NSF science and technology center, working on elucidating
the molecular basis of plant-microbe interactions. The positions will
be for two years with a possibility for renewal depending on funding
and progress.

Receptor kinases play an important role in the mechanism with which
organisms perceive and respond to environmental signals; regulating
growth and development in both animals and plants. Receptor kinases
have also been demonstrated to play a role in meditating disease
resistance to Xanthomonas, a serious bacterial disease of most crop
species. (Song et al., 1995 Science 270, 1801). A basic understanding
of receptor kinase mediated disease resistance in model crop species
and the identification of recognition determinants will aid in the
development of engineered resistance.

The candidates will engineer Xanthomonas resistance in tomato and
tobacco using rice and tomato receptor kinases (TRKs); analyze the role
of TRKs in Xanthomonas susceptible tomato mutants; test cosegregation
of TRK1 in populations segregating for Xanthomonas resistance;
construct chimeric genes with receptor domain swaps from plants and
animals, analyze stably transformed plants carrying hybrid genes, and
develop transient assays as a means to locate, characterize and
manipulate recognition and signaling domains. Candidates should have a
Ph. D. degree and extensive experience in molecular biology. Send a
letter of interest, curriculum vitae and three letters of references
(including fax, phone, and e-mail) to:
