Postdoctoral position is currently available for research on elucidation of
the Mi-mediated signal transduction pathways.  The tomato gene, Mi, is the
first cloned plant resistance gene with dual specificity to two unrelated
organisms, a nematode and an aphid.  Despite this novel function, Mi
encodes a protein sharing molecular features with recently described
single-specificity resistance genes.  Resistance to nematodes is
characterized by hypersensitive response or cell death, however no cell
death is seen with the resistance to aphid.  The position involves the
identification of components of the resistance signal transduction pathway
to root-knot nematodes and potato aphid using mutational analysis.
Applicants should have experience in genetics and molecular biology,
however, prior work with plants is not required. A cover letter describing
