Dear Arabinetters,

extended the application deadline until April 30.

Should you decide to apply, email applications are suitable. Please
address selection criteria in your letter of application.

Post-doctoral position in Plant Cell and Environmental Biology at
the Australian National University, Canberra -
available immediately to investigate the role of environmental and
endogenous mechanical forces in cell and plant development.

The challenge is to understand how exogenous forces such as those
generated by soils on root tips, or imposed on guard cells during
stomatal opening and closing by atmospheric changes (humidity and
carbon dioxide levels for example) interact with genetically
programmed endogenous mechanical fields and modify plant morphology,
development and performance.

The position is funded by a new strategic research initiative
between the Plant Cell Biology Group and the Environmental Biology
Group at the Research School of Biological Sciences. The program is
led by Dr Josette Masle and Dr Geoffrey Wasteneys and involves
collaboration with Professor Farquhar and Dr Williamson whose
interests range from the molecular control of cell wall synthesis and
of the interactions between cell wall and cytoskeleton, to stomatal
and root stress physiology. We are well equipped for a wide range of
experimental approaches including pressure probe measurements in
single cells, microscopy (cooled CCD and confocal) of living cells,
microinjections and are setting up a state-of-the-art high resolution
microscopy facility that will permit simultaneous pressure probe and
visual (fluorescence or DIC) analysis of living cells.

The appointment will be for 2 years.
initial closing date 20 April 1998 but late applications will be
