ZIGIA is a new project at the MAX PLANCK INSTITUTE for Plant Breeding
Research in Cologne, Germany, (www.mpiz-koeln.mpg.de) that focusses on
the identification of novel gene-function relationships in plants by
screening populations of Arabidopsis thaliana mutants containing
En/Spm-transposon or T-DNA insertions. The project is funded by the
German government and four plant breeding companies with the goal of
identifying novel genes for the improvement of crop plant performance.
Applications are invited for the following positions:

Five Postdoctoral Scientists in plant molecular biology

(1) for the development of Arabidopsis thaliana mutant populations
containing transposon or T-DNA insertions.

(2) for the screening of mutant populations for phenotypes and genes
using either gene tagging or PCR based approaches.

(3) for the physiological and molecular characterisation of phenotypes
and their corresponding genes.

Experience with Arabidopsis, cell culture techniques or bioinformatics
is preferred. Since the project involves cooperation with several
companies, communication skills and a strong interest in the transfer
of fundamental knowledge to applied research are indispensable.

Database/Bioinformatics Expert
for the design and maintenance of the in-house database. The successful
candidate should have experience in the management of relational and/or
object oriented databases, database interfaces, SQL, UNIX, web
technology and bioinformatics.

Eight Research Technicians
with experience in plant molecular biology or genome mapping.

The posts are available immediately for a period of up to three years,
and may be extended to 5 years. The salaries depending on experience
will be: Post-doc 70.000-85.000 DM, Research Technician 43.000-60.000
DM per year.

Applications marked ZIGIA, including research experience, curriculum
vitae and a list of publications, should be sent to Prof. Dr. Heinz
Saedler, MPIZ, Carl-von-Linne Weg 10, D-50829 Koeln, Germany before 28
February 1998. Applications sent by e-mail (dekker at mpiz-koeln.mpg.de)
are welcome. Informal enquiries may be made by e-mail to Dr. Koen Dekker
(dekker at mpiz-koeln.mpg.de). The MPIZ is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
