Light control of chloroplast development in Arabidopsis

A BBSRC-funded Ph.D. studentship is available to UK residents and, on a
fees-only basis, to EU nationals non-resident in the UK. The project
involves the study the regulation by light of genes necessary for
chloroplast development in Arabidopsis thaliana. We are using a genetic
and cell biological approach to understand how light and signals from the
plastid itself interact in the development of the photosynthetic
machinery. The Ph.D. project will attempt to identify new mutants in which
the sensitivity to light of a photosynthetic gene promoter is altered.
Depending on interests and skills, the project may also include other
aspects of light-regulated chloroplast development.

The candidate should have an upper second or first class honours degree in
biology, biochemistry, plant biology, genetics or a related discipline.
Some experience with genetics or molecular biology techniques will be
advantageous. The position will start in September 1998. The studentship

Royal Holloway provides a dynamic environment for work on chloroplast
biology and photomorphogenesis in Arabidopsis. Our laboratory works in
close collaboration with that of Dr. Kevin Pyke. The college is close to
Windsor Great Park and has easy access to central London.

Applications should include a cv and the names and addresses of two
referees. The post will remain open until filled. Further enquiries can be
directed to Enrique L=DBpez-Juez.
