The EC have announced funding totalling 10 mecu (approx 10 mUSD), subject to
successful contract negotiation, for two projects to continue sequencing the
Arabidopsis genome. These will start in July 1998 and run for two years. Each
project aims to sequence 9 Mb of DNA.
Together with previous sequence, EC-funded Arabidopsis sequence will therefore
total approximately 26 Mb after successful completion of these contracts. This
work should be completed before July 2000.
One project is coordinated by Francis Quetier and aims to sequence the lower
arm of chromosome 3. Genoscope and the Kazusa Inst have also initiated
sequencing on the top arm of chr 3.
The other project is coordinated by Mike Bevan and will complete the long arm
of chr 4 and the top arm of chr 5, in collaboration with the CSHLSC and the
Kazusa Inst. This work should be completed by the end of 1999.
