Dear colleagues

Two postdoctoral positions are available in Molecular Plant-Microbe=20
Interactions at The Sainsbury Laboratory.=20

Sincerely, Jane Parker

SAINSBURY LABORATORY Post Doctoral Scientists

Applications are invited for two post doctoral positions at The=20
Sainsbury Laboratory which is located at the John Innes Centre, Norwich=

Postdoc.1 (SL/523) will join the group of Dr Martin Parniske studying=
the molecular genetics of plant root symbioses. Mutants of the model=20=

legume Lotus japonicus have been identified which are defective in the=
formation of root nodules induced by Rhizobium and are also impaired in=
their interaction with arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi. The successful=20
candidate will undertake the AFLP-based mapping and cloning of one of=
the affected genes. Ideally, he/she will have experience in genetical=
and molecular biology techniques.

Postdoc.2 (SL/528) will join the group of Dr Jane Parker studying R=20
gene-mediated signalling pathways in the model plant, Arabidopsis.=20
Mutational analysis has led to the cloning of two disease resistance=20=

signalling genes. These encode distinct proteins that share similarity=
to eukaryotic lipases. The successful candidate will investigate their=
anticipated hydrolytic activities in vitro and in vivo and target=20
related genes for analysis using functional genomic technologies.=20
Experience in protein biochemistry and molecular biology is desirable.=

Both appointments are initially for two years with the possibility of=
extension. They will be on the RA1A scale (starting salary in the range=
of =A315735 - =A323651pa) and will have some technical support. Positio=
are available from the 1st of February 1999, but a later starting date=
will also be considered. More information can be obtained on the JIC=20=

webpage (www.jic.bbsrc.ac.uk) and informal enquiries can be made to=20
martin.parniske at bbsrc.ac.uk and jane.parker at bbsrc.ac.uk.

Letters of application (quoting ref.) including a full CV, citing=20
academic referees and recent publications should be sent to Mrs Pat=20
Phillips, Sainsbury Laboratory, John Innes Centre, Colney Lane, Norwich=
NR4 7UH by Dec. 11th, 1998.
